In 1815 an unofficial copper coin, called the Magdalen penny, was issued by Sir Isaac Coffin for the Magdalen Islands, which had been granted to him after the American Revolution as a reward for his public service. The Magdalen penny thus became the first coin ever to be struck specifically for use in Canada.
